9th GUP ORANGE BELT REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Situps – 25 Pushups – 10
•Front Kick/Side Kick extensions – 5 seconds
KOREAN TERMINOLOGY:
•Basic Class commands
•Names of basic blocks, punches, kicks
•Counting one through ten
TECHNIQUES:
•Three blocks: low, middle, (intro to high) - moving forward and backwards
•Front and side kick – off both legs
•Two kick/punch combinations
FORMS (Hyungs):
•Giecho Hyung Il Bu – Form 1
•Giecho Hyung Il Bu Sang Gup – Advanced Form 1
SELF DEFENSE (Ho Sin Sul):
•One hand//two hand grab/lapel grab intro
SPARRING (Dae Ryun):
•Simple combinations
•Keep hands up, able to move away from opponent
BREAKING (Kyuck Pa):
•Complete one half board break with foot stomp
ATTENDANCE:
•Must attend a minimum of one-two karate sessions once a week

8th GUP BLUE BELT REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Situps – 30 Pushups - 15

•Counting one through fifteen
TECHNIQUES:
•Four basic blocks: moving forward, backwards, and turning

•Giecho Hyung Yi Bu – Form 2
•Giecho Hyung Sam Bu – Form 3
SELF DEFENSE (Ho Sin Sul): 9th gup requirements plus:
a) Intro to hair grab/Intro to two hand choke from front/behind
SPARRING (Dae Ryun):
•Sparring with control using simple combinations
•Keep hands up and able to move away from opponent
BREAKING (Kyuck Pa):
•Complete one half board break with foot stomp or hammer fist
ATTENDANCE:
•Attend a minimum of two consecutive karate sessions once a week
•Attend at least 90% of classes and arrive on time to class
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•Good attitude, respectful/helpful to others
•Must wear white uniform with required patches to grading
•Need mouthpiece and protective cup for sparring
7th GUP BLUE BELT REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

•Basic blocks, punches, kicks, and hand strikes
•Counting one through twenty
TECHNIQUES:
•Side blocks and knife hand blocks: moving forward, backward, and turning
•Four basic kicks: Front, Round, Side, Back – using both legs
•Four kick/punch combinations – three moves minimum
FORMS (Hyungs): 8 gup blue requirements plus:
•Giecho Hyung Yi Bu Sang Gup – Advanced Form 2
•Giecho Hyung Yi Bu Sang Gup – Advanced Form 3
SELF DEFENSE (Ho Sin Sul): 9th and 8th gup requirements plus:
•Intro to hair grab and basic falls: front, back, side
SPARRING (Dae Ryun):
•Two to Three techniques combinations
Able to spar forward, backward, sideways moving away from opponent
•Spars with control and keeps hands up
BREAKING (Kyuck Pa):
•Complete two half boards break or one full board break with foot or hand
ATTENDANCE:
•Attend a minimum of four karate sessions
•Attend at least 90% of classes and arrive on time to class

APPRENTICE GREEN BELT REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

•Names of all blocks, punches, kicks, hand strikes, and stances
TECHNIQUES:
•All Basic blocks and kicks
•Four hand techniques - left and right
•At least five kick/punch combinations – four move minimum
FORMS (Hyungs): 7th gup blue requirements plus:
•Pyong Ahn Cho Dan – Peace and Confidence Form 1 (formerly Form 4)
SELF DEFENSE (Ho Sin Sul): 9th and 8th gup requirements plus
• Intro to bear hug
SPARRING (Dae Ryun):
•Use of spinning kicks/multiple kicks off same leg while keeping hands up
Spars with control, respect to size and experience of opponent
BREAKING (Kyuck Pa):
•Complete one full board break with foot/hand (not using stomp or hammer fist)
ATTENDANCE:
•Must attend a minimum of six to eight karate sessions once a week (about one full year of karate)
•Attend at least 90% of classes and arrive consistently on time
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•Good attitude, respectful and helpful to others
•Attainment of Karate patch, knowledge of meaning
•Must wear white uniform with required patches to grading
•Show marked improvement since last grading
6th GUP GREEN BELT REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Must meet increased physical fitness requirement for rank/age
KOREAN TERMINOLOGY:
•All Class commands and counting in Korean numbers one through forty
•Names of all blocks, punches, kicks, hand strikes, and stances
TECHNIQUES:
•All Basic blocks and kicks
•Four hand techniques - left and right
•Six kick/punch combinations – four move minimum

•Apprentice Green requirements plus:
•Chil Sung Ilru – Seven Stars of the Plow Form 1 (formerly Form 4 ½)
•Intro to Bong Il Bu – Federation Bo Staff Form 1
SELF DEFENSE (Ho Sin Sul):
All prior self defense with more intensity and refinement
SPARRING (Dae Ryun):
•Use of spinning and jumping kicks/multiple kicks off same leg
•Block and counter punch under pressure
•Spars with control, respect to size and experience of opponent while keeping hands up
BREAKING (Kyuck Pa):
•Complete multiple board break with foot or hand
ATTENDANCE:
•Must attend a minimum of nine to ten karate sessions
•Must attend at least 90% of classes and arrive consistently on time
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•Good attitude, respectful/helpful to others
•Must wear green trim on dobak top with all required patches to grading
•Show marked improvement since last grading
•Must mentor/volunteer to teach lower ranks in class/other classes
5th GUP GREEN BELT REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Must meet increased physical fitness requirements per rank/age
KOREAN TERMINOLOGY:
•All Class commands and counting in Korean through number fifty
•Names of all blocks, punches, kicks, hand strikes, and stances
TECHNIQUES:
•All Basic and intermediate blocks and kicks
•Five hand techniques - left and right
•Seven kick/punch combinations – four move minimum
FORMS (Hyungs): 6 gup green requirements plus:
•Pyong Ahn Yi Dan – Peace and Confidence Form 2 (formerly Form 5)
•Pyong Ahn Sahm Dan – Peace and Confidence Form 3 (formerly Form 6)
•Learning Bong Il Bu – Federation Bo Staff Form 1
SELF DEFENSE (Ho Sin Sul): 6 gup green requirements plus:
• Defend against any attack with use of takedown
SPARRING (Dae Ryun):
•Use of spinning and jumping kicks with multiple kicks off same leg
•Block and counter punch under pressure while keeping hands up protecting body
•Controlled sparring with more intensity, with respect to size/experience of opponent
BREAKING (Kyuck Pa):
•Multiple board break with foot and hand techniques (some non stationary)
ATTENDANCE:
•Minimum of nine-ten karate sessions (over one year of karate lessons)
•Must attend at least 90% of classes and arrive consistently on time
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•Good attitude, respectful/helpful to others
•Must wear trimmed green on dobak top with required patches to grading
•Show marked improvement since last grading
•Must mentor/volunteer to teach lower ranks in class or other classes
4th GUP GREEN BELT REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Must meet increased physical fitness requirements per rank/age

•Names of all blocks, punches, kicks, hand strikes, and stances
TECHNIQUES: All Basic blocks and kicks
•Six hand techniques - left and right
•At least an eight kick/punch combinations – four move minimum
FORMS (Hyungs): 5th gup green requirements plus:
•Pyong Ahn Sah Dan – Peace and Confidence Form 4 (formerly Form 7)
•Pyong Ahn Oe Dan – Peace and Confidence Form 5 (formerly Form 8)
•Bong Il Bu – Federation Bo Staff Form 1
SELF DEFENSE (Ho Sin Sul): 5 gup green requirements plus:
•Roll out of an attack into ready stance(fighting position)
SPARRING (Dae Ryun):
•Use of spinning and jumping kicks with use of multiple kicks off same leg
•Block and counter punch under pressure
•Spars with control, respect to size/ experience of opponen
BREAKING (Kyuck Pa):
•Complete multiple board break with foot and hand techniques
(one stationary break and one without use of stands)
ATTENDANCE:
•Must attend a minimum of 12-14 karate sessions once per week
•Must attend at least 90% of classes and arrive consistently on time
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•Good attitude, respectful/helpful to others
•Must wear trimmed green on dobak top with required patches to grading
•Show marked improvement since last grading
•Mentor/volunteer to teach lower ranks in class or other classes
APPRENTICE RED BELT REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Must meet increased physical fitness requirements per rank/age

•Counting one through seventy
TECHNIQUES: All Basic and advance blocks and kicks
•Multiple hand techniques - left and right
•Multiple kick/punch combinations – four move minimum
FORMS (Hyungs): 4th gup green requirements plus:
•Pyong Ahn Oe Dan – Peace and Confidence Form 5 (formerly Form 8)
•Chil Sung Yi Ru – Seven Stars of the Plow Form 2 (formerly form 8 ½)
•Advanced bo staff form
SELF DEFENSE (Ho Sin Sul): 4 gup green requirements plus:
•Roll out of an attack into ready stance(fighting position)
SPARRING (Dae Ryun):
•Can kick above chest level effectively with control with at least two kick combination
•Can effectively use at least one jumping kick combination
•Spars with control, respect to size and experience of opponent while keeping hands up
BREAKING (Kyuck Pa):
•At least two or more multiple board breaks using jumping kick and hand techniques
ATTENDANCE:
•Minimum of 16-20 karate sessions (at least 1 ½ - 2 yrs. Karate instruction)
•Must attend at least 90% of classes and arrive consistently on time
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•Good attitude, respectful/helpful to others

3RD GUP RED BELT REQUIREMENTS

TECHNIQUES:
•All Basic and advance blocks and kicks
•Multiple (>six) hand techniques - left and right
•Multiple (>eight) kick/punch combinations – four move minimum
FORMS (Hyungs): apprentice red requirements plus:
•Bassai
•Introduction to different weapons
•Personal creation of kata form with/without weapon of choice
SELF DEFENSE (Ho Sin Sul):
•Intesify all prior learned techniques and skills
SPARRING (Dae Ryun):
•Must show increased use of kick/punch combinations, with degree of difficulty
BREAKING (Kyuck Pa):
•Complete at least three or more multiple board breaks using jumping kick and hand techniques
ATTENDANCE:
•Attend a minimum of 16-20 karate sessions once per week (over 2 years of karate instruction)
•Must attend at least 90% of classes and arrive consistently on time
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•Good attitude, respectful/helpful to others
•Must wear red trim on dobak top with required patches to grading
•Show marked improvement since last grading
•Must develop leadership skills by setting good example in class and by teaching basics to under gups for at least five hours
2nd GUP RED BELT REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Must meet increased physical fitness requirements according to rank/age
KOREAN TERMINOLOGY:
•Knowledge of advance terminology
•Counting one through eighty
TECHNIQUES: 3rd gup red requirements plus:
•Shows increased knowledge of blocks/kicks using multiple combination of techniques
FORMS (Hyungs): 3rd gup red requirements plus:
•Naihanji Cho Dan (Naihanji I) – Iron Horse Form 1 (alone and with no points)
•Creation of weapons kata or personal kata with/without music
SELF DEFENSE (Ho Sin Sul): 3rd gup red belt requirements plus:
• Roll into fighting stance from a takedown
SPARRING (Dae Ryun):
•Must show increased use of kick/punch combinations/techniques with degree of difficulty and good use of control with respect to opponent’s rank
BREAKING (Kyuck Pa):
•Complete at least three or more multiple board breaks using jumping kick and hand techniques
ATTENDANCE:
•Must arrive consistently on time and attend at least 90% of classes
•Minimum of two – three years of karate commitment
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•Good attitude, respectful/helpful to others
•Must wear red trim on dobak top with required patches to grading
•Show marked improvement since last grading

1st GUP RED BELT REQUIREMENTS

TECHNIQUES:
Multiple hand techniques - left and right (four move minimum)
•Ten kick/punch combinations – five move minimum
FORMS (Hyungs): 2nd gup red requirements plus:
•Naihanji Yi Dan (Naihanji II) - Iron Horse Form 2 (alone and with no points)
•Weapon form (music optional)
SELF DEFENSE (Ho Sin Sul):
•Acquirement of other martial arts defenses, multiple takedowns from holds/grappling
SPARRING (Dae Ryun):
•Increased use of spinning kicks and punches/blocking in combinations
•Spars with control, respect to size/experience of opponent while keeping hands up
BREAKING (Kyuck Pa):
•Complete at least three or more multiple board breaks using jumping kick and hand techniques
ATTENDANCE:
•Must attend a minimum of two to three sessions since last grading
•Must attend at least 90% of classes and arrive consistently on time
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•Good attitude, respectful/helpful to others
•Must wear red trim on dobak top with required patches to grading
•Show marked improvement since last grading

APPRENTICE BLACK BELT REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Must meet increased physical fitness requirements per rank/age
KOREAN TERMINOLOGY:
•Knowledge of advanced terminology
•Body parts and targets
•Counting one through one hundred
•History of Tang Soo Do
TECHNIQUES:
•Must show intensity with all techniques using multiple combinations hitting to precise target areas
FORMS (Hyungs): 1st gup red requirements plus:
•Naihanji Sam Dan (Naihanji III) – Iron Horse Form (alone and with no points)
• Comprised unique weapons form of your own (Music optional)
SELF DEFENSE (Ho Sin Sul): 1st gup red belt requirements plus:
•Knowledge of usage of moves in multiple scenarios
SPARRING (Dae Ryun):
•Must show increased use of kick/punch combinations/techniques with degree of difficulty
BREAKING (Kyuck Pa):
•Complete at least four or more multiple board breaks using jumping kick/hand techniques or other creative breaking combination
ATTENDANCE:
•Must attend at least 90% of classes and arrive consistently on time
•Karate commitment of at least three – four years attending once per week
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•Good attitude, respectful/helpful to others
•Must wear black trim on dobak top with required patches to grading
•Show marked improvement since last grading
•Must develop leadership skills by setting a good example in class and by teaching basics to under gups for at least fifteen hours
Ee Dan (2nd Dan) Black Belt Requirements:
Time commitment:
•Minimum of two years as Cho Dan Black belt

•Jin Te (Jin Do)

•Form invented by the student (music optional)
Weapons hyung:
•Invent your own form with weapon of choice (music optional)
Self-Defense (Ho Sin Sul):
•All advanced techniques/takedowns as outlined in student manual with more intensity.
Sparring/Breaking:
•Advanced sparring combinations involving spinning kicks
•Breaking involving more free held breaks with intensity and creativity.
Instruction:
•Assist with instruction of students, mentor green/red belts
Essay/Written Exam: To be determined by Master Belt Panel
•Student will be informed of topic of essay prior to testing
•Korean terminology will be tested, instructor will provide any additional information prior to testing
